Sportster Choppa!




Last year I began my riding journey and quickly learned that I was not a "stock" kinda gal; I would inevitably modify anything I called my own. I took the Motorcycle Safety Course and learned on a Honda Rebel. That felt good to me at the time, however, my husbands uncle Nate offered me his 2008 Suzuki Boulevard. It was a little more powerful than I imagined, but I could adapt. The Boulevard was not running, but at no cost other than to get the thing running, I obviously took it. My imagination ran wild with plans of bobbing it out. I had parts picked on multiple websites and was ready to pull the trigger when we learned that it was going to take much more work than we thought to get it running; something was wrong in the heads and we didn't have the time to learn the mechanics of, nor did we want to spend the summer fixing the bike then the season come to an end shortly after.


With having learned to ride so fresh in my mind and body, I feared that I would loose my abilities and forget everything if I didn't get to riding soon. So, we bought a little 2006 Honda Rebel off Facebook Marketplace for around $2k. The guy we bought if from delivered it right to my house! What a deal! I hoped on that little weedwhacker and drove it right over to mom and Chickens. Oh my god, that thing was so fun. I started scheming again on how I would modify this biker. Then, we went up to Fuel Cleveland Chopper Show.


That day changed me. It lit up something inside of me that I didn't realize was dark. I was going to build a chopper. I wanted to be apart of that community of builders, artists, and fabricators. I spent all day admiring the different builds and my mind was swimming with questions. I saw bikes there that I had followed on social media for years; they were so much more stunning in person if you could believe that. Jacob, my husband, was with me and was quickly on board with my newest venture. We visited Lowbrow Customs booth and looked at the frames, which sealed the deal. Only problem was, my Rebel wasn't going to cut it. While there were some pretty rad Honda chops at the show, mine was a little 250 and wouldn't be worthy of what I was envisioning.


I knew I wanted a vintage motor, so to Marketplace I went again. I browed some really sweet vintage Honda motors, Ironheads, and of course, Sportsters. Ultimately, we journeyed about 40 miles south to pick up my 1992 Evo Sportster 883. I have always had a major love for Evo's and knew that the aftermarket on sportster parts is broad. Now, I could really get to planning.


Currently, the Sporty sits next to my 1950 Panhead in my kitchen. I am saving up for a hardtail frame, springer front end, etc. I received some pretty sweet rabbit ear handlebars from TC Bros for Christmas, so at least that's checked off the list, LOL. I cant wait to work my magic on this paintjob too.
